Core Changes in the Update
Google has implemented broad updates to NotebookLM, its AI note-taking application. The system now operates on the upgraded Gemini 3.5 model. This change is intended to produce responses that are more accurate and consistent when users interact with their notes and source materials.
The original NotebookLM, released in 2023, lets users query their uploaded notes and sources through an AI interface. The current update extends this function by removing the requirement to import materials first. Users can now initiate a project by entering questions on a topic, after which the tool draws on Google Search to locate relevant sources.
How the New Workflow Operates
Under the revised process, NotebookLM constructs a set of sources automatically based on the initial query. This approach shifts the starting point from manual uploads of documents or YouTube links to an automated discovery step. The stated goal is to reduce the time spent gathering materials before analysis begins.
The integration with Google Search is presented as a direct extension of existing capabilities rather than a replacement. NotebookLM continues to support interaction with user-provided content, while the new option adds an entry path that relies on external search results. Accuracy remains dependent on the underlying Gemini 3.5 model and the quality of sources returned by the search process.
