Scaling Back on Electric Vehicle Hype

After initial overoptimism about the rapid shift to electric vehicles in the US, automakers find themselves dialing back ambitious production plans. Tariffs on imports and the elimination of federal EV incentives bear much of the responsibility, compounded by persistent customer hesitations around range and towing capabilities for full-size trucks. This reality check has hit domestic manufacturers hard, as their efforts to pivot loyal truck buyers toward all-electric alternatives have faltered.

The broader slowdown reflects a market not yet ready for the scale of investment poured into battery electric vehicles, particularly in the large pickup and SUV segments where power and utility demands clash with current battery limitations.

GM's Factory Zero Hits Pause

General Motors has maintained a strong presence in the large EV market through brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC, offering a lineup of electric pickups and SUVs. However, the dedicated Factory Zero assembly plant in Hamtramck, Michigan, went idle two weeks ago, resulting in temporary layoffs for 1300 workers. Production is slated to resume on April 13, focusing on high-profile models including the Escalade IQ, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC Hummer EVs.

This isn't GM's first brush with EV production woes at the facility. In late October last year, the company permanently cut 1700 jobs across Michigan and Tennessee EV and battery plants, including Factory Zero. Shortly after, it idled the big EV lines for about a month before restarting on a single shift. While the current pause is temporary, it underscores ongoing demand softness for these behemoths.

Ripple Effects Across Competitors

GM's challenges are not isolated. Ford pulled the plug on its F-150 Lightning electric pickup in December, shifting resources toward battery storage instead. Ram, meanwhile, never even brought a full battery electric truck to production, opting instead for hybrid approaches with massive batteries suited to its customer base.

These moves highlight a collective reassessment among US original equipment manufacturers. The dream of seamlessly transitioning full-size truck owners to electric versions has bumped against real-world barriers like inadequate range for towing heavy loads and the high costs that deter mass adoption without subsidies.
