The Ban on Shein at UT Austin
Fast-fashion retailer Shein has been officially banned from the University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation's largest college campuses. The restriction applies to the campus Wi-Fi networks, confirming compliance with the state's prohibited technologies list. This move stems from cybersecurity and foreign interference concerns tied to Chinese-affiliated companies.
Governor Abbott's Expanded Policy
The ban follows Governor Greg Abbott's January expansion of a 2022 directive, now prohibiting roughly 50 Chinese-affiliated companies—including Alibaba and Temu—from state devices. UT Austin stated the policy ensures regulatory compliance, raises awareness of security risks, and safeguards sensitive data. Initially targeting TikTok in December 2022, the list has grown to include e-commerce sites, AI tools, and social media apps linked to the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party.
Rogue actors across the globe who wish harm on Texans should not be allowed to infiltrate our state's network and devices. Hostile adversaries harvest user data through AI and other applications and hardware to exploit, manipulate, and violate users and put them at extreme risk. Today, I am expanding the prohibited technologies list to mitigate that risk and protect the privacy of Texans from the People's Republic of China, the Chinese Communist Party, and any other hostile foreign actors who may attempt to undermine the safety and security of Texas.
Prohibited Companies and Broader Context
Among the 54 prohibited sites are social media platform RedNote, AI platform DeepSeek, electronics giant Xiaomi, Alipay, and Baidu—China's equivalent of Google. The campus previously blocked TikTok in line with state rules. Separately, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced an investigation into Shein for potential violations involving unethical labor practices, unsafe consumer products, and concerns over toxic materials.
Public Reactions
The Shein ban—which propelled the company into a multibillion-dollar global powerhouse with trendy clothes at hyper-affordable prices—has sparked mixed social media responses. Some users expressed frustration over the change, while others criticized Shein's controversial manufacturing ethics and labor practices.
