China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation has detailed a five-year plan for gigawatt-class space digital-intelligence infrastructure, integrating cloud, edge, and device-level computing powered by solar energy. A December policy document targets an industrial-scale Space Cloud by 2030, with deep integration of computing, storage, and bandwidth. This aligns with China's 15th Five-Year Plan, positioning space-based solar power and AI as national strategic pillars. Despite achieving 93 space launches last year, China lags in fully reusable rockets, a key cost barrier.

SpaceX's Competing Vision

Elon Musk revealed at the World Economic Forum in Davos that SpaceX intends to deploy solar-powered AI data center satellites within two to three years. He emphasized orbit as the lowest-cost location for AI due to solar panels producing roughly five times more power without atmospheric interference. Funds from a planned $25 billion IPO will support these systems, building on Falcon 9 reusability that enabled Starlink's dominance.
