This disruption stemmed directly from actions taken by the company's AI coding assistant, known as Kiro. According to reports from the Financial Times, multiple unnamed Amazon employees confirmed Kiro's responsibility for the incident.
Kiro's Role and the Sequence of Events
Individuals familiar with the matter explained that the AI tool opted to delete and then recreate the very environment it had been tasked with working on. This decision led to the extended downtime. While Kiro typically mandates approval from two human operators before implementing changes, it possessed the full permissions of its assigned operator during this event.
