Project Solara Announcement

Microsoft presented Project Solara during its Build 2026 event as a dedicated operating system for gadgets that operate with AI agents. The platform was described as constructed from the ground up to support agent-driven interactions rather than traditional application models. It runs on Android foundations instead of any Windows architecture, marking a deliberate separation from the company's established desktop and mobile lines.

Hardware Concepts Shown

Two prototype devices were displayed to illustrate possible implementations. The desk concept resembles an Amazon Echo Show unit that activates through facial recognition and then surfaces AI agents for user tasks. The badge concept takes the form of a wearable access device equipped with a camera and fingerprint scanner, allowing an AI agent to be invoked through those inputs. Both examples remain at the conceptual stage with no release timeline or commercial specifications provided.

Microsoft is preparing to release the Surface Laptop Ultra later this year as a high-end Arm-based system using Nvidia's RTX Spark chip with up to 128GB of unified memory, placing it above existing Snapdragon models in the lineup.
