Taskbar placement options now available in testing
The latest Windows 11 test update introduces the option to reposition the taskbar on the bottom, top, left, or right side of the screen. This change is being distributed to Windows 11 Insiders in the Experimental channel and represents a direct response to user feedback collected since the initial release of Windows 11.
Users can also modify the alignment of icons within the taskbar itself. Once the taskbar is moved, the Start menu drawer remains accessible from the new location without requiring additional configuration steps.
Start menu and taskbar size adjustments
Alongside repositioning, the update permits changes to the size of the Start menu. A shorter taskbar configuration is included as well, which may benefit devices with limited screen space such as certain laptops or tablets. These adjustments are presented as optional settings rather than default behaviors.
The modifications remain limited to the test build at this stage. No timeline has been confirmed for broader release to all Windows 11 users, and further refinements may occur based on feedback gathered during the Insider testing period.
Key points from the current test build
- Taskbar can be placed on any of the four screen edges
- Icon alignment inside the taskbar can be changed independently
- Start menu size is adjustable in the test version
- Shorter taskbar option added for smaller displays
- Changes are currently restricted to Experimental channel Insiders
We first teased its movable taskbar in March as part of efforts to rebuild trust among users.
