Account Mandate Hits Vizio Buyers
Prospective Vizio TV buyers face a new hurdle: many sets won't operate fully without a Walmart account. Walmart, which purchased Vizio in December 2024 to enhance its advertising capabilities through customer data, rolled out this policy this week for select newly bought models. Setup and smart TV features demand the account, limiting access otherwise.
Evolution of Vizio Requirements
Vizio TVs have needed a Vizio account since 2024, justified by the company for exclusive offers, subscription handling, and personalized support. This ties into Vizio's core ad-driven business, where OS tracking fuels revenue. Walmart's integration escalates this by layering its own account system atop the existing framework.
Walmart accounts will be mandatory on “select new Vizio OS TVs” for owners to complete onboarding and to use smart TV features.
Implications for Users
Owners of affected TVs must link a Walmart profile to unlock full potential, aligning with Walmart's push to centralize data for advertisers. While not all models enforce this yet, the change signals broader integration post-acquisition.
