Details of the Shooting
Charlie Kirk, founder and president of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was 31 years old. Kirk sustained a gunshot wound to the neck while addressing a large crowd from underneath a tent in the middle of an outdoor quad. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The event was part of Turning Point USA's American Comeback Tour, launched earlier this spring.
Kirk's Background and Founding of TPUSA
Kirk rose to prominence after dropping out of college to pursue political activism. He founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA) in 2012 as a non-profit organization aimed at promoting conservative youth activism at high school and college campuses. The idea stemmed from encouragement by Tea Party activist Bill Montgomery, who urged Kirk to prioritize activism over college attendance and assisted in launching the group. Later that year, Republican donor Foster Friess provided financial support to the emerging organization.
TPUSA's Mission and Operations
According to TPUSA's website, the organization's mission is to identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government. It has grown into one of the fastest-expanding youth organizations in the U.S., with a presence on over 3,500 campuses across all 50 states. TPUSA employs more than 350 full- and part-time staff dedicated to recruiting activists, registering voters, and developing leaders within conservative communities. The group runs a national field program that involves setting up tables on campuses for face-to-face engagement, distributing educational materials, registering new activists, and hosting events.
Events and Influence
Kirk led an annual tour of college campuses, engaging in debates characterized by his 'prove me wrong' style. TPUSA also hosts activist conferences, including six national summits and eight regional events each year. Prominent Republican and conservative figures frequently speak at these gatherings, including President Donald Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and others.
