College Statement on Kirk's Engagement
Hillsdale College, founded in 1844 as a small Christian classical liberal arts institution, confirms that conservative activist Charlie Kirk took dozens of its online courses before his death. The college's online program, launched in 2011, has served over 4.2 million Americans with courses in history, politics, economics, philosophy, religion, and related subjects. Its mission, as stated on its website, is to provide education to all who wish to learn in order to preserve America's civil and religious liberties.
Without presuming to speak for Charlie, we believe he was drawn to Hillsdale's independence and its mission: to teach the truth and to live by it. Charlie took some 30 of our online courses.
Community Response and Support
Davis noted that the college is praying for Kirk's widow Erika and their children, while sharing memories of lectures, conversations, and podcasts involving Kirk with faculty, staff, and students. The institution has received numerous calls offering support and prayers since Kirk's assassination on September 10. Hillsdale students gathered for a quiet vigil in response to the news.
We are praying for Erika and their children, and have been sharing memories of Charlie: lectures, conversations, and podcasts he joined with our faculty, staff, and students.
Personal Ties with College Leadership
Beyond online courses, Kirk maintained a personal relationship with Hillsdale College President Dr. Larry P. Arnn. Kirk spoke at the college's National Leadership Seminar in Phoenix in February. The college's homepage currently displays a tribute image linking to a 'We Remember Charlie Kirk' page, which includes a video message from Arnn.
After Charlie had taken one of our online courses, passed the examination, received his certificate, photographed himself with it, and texted it to me. Before his death, he did that many times. The prevailing subject was always something he wanted to know.
I'm privileged to know lots and lots of high-minded, intelligent and serious young people. Charlie is one of the best I ever saw. It's an honor to have known him.
