Reevaluating Next-Generation Plans
The RAMageddon crisis has prompted Microsoft to reconsider core aspects of its Xbox console hardware strategy. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and strategy chief Matthew Ball have both indicated this week that the company is revisiting its approach to the upcoming Project Helix console while also examining alternative business models for the console segment.
Focus on Affordability and Flexibility
Ball stated in an interview with The Game Business that the team is working intensively to rethink every element of Helix. The console remains a committed project, yet the company recognizes the need for substantial internal changes to deliver a product that meets market demands for lower costs and greater adaptability.
We are working very hard to rethink everything that we can about Helix, which is a console we are committed to shipping, and we are very cognizant of the ways in which we need to change as a company to make sure it is affordable, to make sure that it's flexible
Broader Business Model Exploration
Alongside hardware revisions, Microsoft is exploring different console business models to address current challenges. This shift reflects a pragmatic response to supply and cost pressures rather than a departure from the company's long-term commitment to dedicated gaming hardware.
