Announcement of Terafab Facility
Billionaire Elon Musk stated Tesla and SpaceX will build an advanced chip facility named Terafab in Austin, Texas, to support emerging technologies amid chip shortages. Terafab will technically be two fabs, each producing one specific chip design, as Musk posted on X on Sunday.
Focus Areas for Each Fab
One facility targets AI chips for Tesla's electric vehicles and Optimus humanoid robots. The other focuses on AI chips for SpaceX's space-based data centers. Musk emphasized these chips are essential to meet computing power demands beyond supplier capabilities.
We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips.
Challenges for SpaceX Chips
- High power and energy ions
- Photons and electron buildup
- Operation at higher temperatures to minimize radiator mass
- Optimization for hostile space environment
We need a high‑powered chip designed for space that takes into account the harsher environment in space, where you’ve got high power, high energy ions, photons, you’ve got electron build up.
Production Goals and Context
Musk thanked existing suppliers including Samsung, TSMC, and Micron, but noted demand will surpass global output. Terafab will eventually produce one terawatt of computing capacity per year, compared to about half a terawatt across the U.S. currently. No timeline was given for the project.
