AT&T's Headquarters Relocation Announcement
AT&T has revealed plans to construct a new corporate headquarters in the suburban city of Plano, outside downtown Dallas. The company communicated this decision in a letter to employees on Monday, marking a shift from its current location in Dallas, which it has occupied since 2008.
CEO John Stankey outlined in the letter that the headquarters will move to an area near the Legacy West food and shopping district in Plano. The selected site spans 54 acres of land that formerly housed the headquarters of Electronic Data Systems.
We'll be transforming this site from the ground up — demolishing the old buildings and designing a new, modern campus that's built for how we work best: together
Details of the Relocation Plan
The initiative will relocate the majority of the 6,000 employees from AT&T's existing high-rise headquarters in Dallas to the new Plano facility. This low-rise campus aims to consolidate more operations on-site, enhancing efficiency.
An AT&T official explained to The Wall Street Journal that suitable large parcels of land were unavailable in downtown Dallas to support the new headquarters design. However, the company intends to maintain some personnel and corporate functions in the downtown area.
AT&T anticipates beginning occupancy of the new headquarters in the second half of 2028.
Context Within Broader Corporate Trends
AT&T's decision reflects a pattern among companies relocating corporate headquarters to Dallas suburbs. For instance, Toyota established its North American headquarters in Plano in 2017, and Fisher Investments announced in 2023 its move from Washington state to Plano.
Other notable examples include Caterpillar and Wells Fargo, which have built campuses in the Dallas suburbs, alongside Goldman Sachs constructing a 14-floor campus in Dallas.
