Acknowledgment of Past Errors
Mark Zuckerberg has openly stated that Meta has made mistakes as the company pushes through a significant workforce restructuring linked to its heavy investment in artificial intelligence. In an internal memo reported by Reuters, the CEO highlighted the difficulties that come with rapid AI development and the company's aggressive efforts to adapt its operations accordingly.
Scale of AI Investments and Competition
Meta has committed billions of dollars to building AI infrastructure and tools. This spending occurs as the company competes directly with OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft for leadership in the field. The firm has also examined how AI agents might take over tasks currently performed by human employees, reflecting a broader strategy to integrate the technology deeply into daily operations.
Given the complexity of these changes, we've made mistakes and will almost certainly make more.
Workforce Changes and Employee Impact
Earlier this year Meta reduced its global workforce by roughly 10 percent in May and moved approximately 7,000 employees into AI-focused roles. The overall restructuring, including prior transfers and role eliminations, is expected to affect around 20 percent of the company's staff. Zuckerberg indicated that the company will seek to place employees reassigned to train AI models into new positions where possible. He stressed that the goal remains to provide as much stability as circumstances allow, while cautioning against overpromising given external factors beyond Meta's control.

Future Layoff Outlook
Zuckerberg reiterated that Meta does not anticipate additional company-wide layoffs for the remainder of the year. The company employed nearly 78,000 people as of the end of March, according to securities filings. By creating new roles tied to AI initiatives, Meta has aimed to maintain flexibility, allowing some employees to shift back if adjustments prove necessary in certain teams.
By creating important new roles for people, this also allowed us to shrink the size of teams knowing that if we make mistakes in some places, then we could transfer some people back.
