Certificate Expiration Ends Functionality
Microsoft has decided not to renew the certificate that validates Office 2019 licenses on Mac. As a result the apps will cease to operate next month. Users who attempt to launch Word, Excel or PowerPoint will encounter immediate blocks rather than gradual degradation.
The company had stated in 2023 that the apps would keep running after support ended. Last month that statement was revised without announcement. The new wording only guarantees that data will remain intact and removes any assurance of continued operation.
Options Presented to Existing Customers
Owners of the 2019 perpetual license now face two paid routes if they need to edit documents. They can purchase Office 2024 outright or begin a Microsoft 365 subscription. Both choices require recurring or one-time expenditure that was not required under the original 2019 terms.
No free extension or workaround has been offered. The change applies specifically to the Mac version; Windows installations of Office 2019 are not affected by the same certificate decision.
Immediate Steps for Mac Users
- Verify current app behavior and back up all documents before the cutoff date.
- Compare one-time purchase pricing of Office 2024 against ongoing Microsoft 365 fees.
- Confirm whether any volume licensing agreements already cover newer versions.
