Microsoft has announced it is constructing an app store dedicated to AI content licensing. The company is actively developing the Publisher Content Marketplace (PCM), which serves as a centralized hub for AI licensing. This platform presents usage terms established by publishers, allowing AI companies to efficiently browse these terms and establish agreements for utilizing online content in grounding their AI models.

Through PCM, content owners gain access to usage-based reporting, which assists in determining appropriate pricing structures. This setup aims to create a structured environment where AI firms can license content legitimately, addressing the needs of both content creators and technology developers.

Microsoft states that it has been codesigning PCM in collaboration with several prominent companies. These include Verge parent Vox Media, The Associated Press, Condé Nast, People, and others. This collaborative approach ensures the platform aligns with the practical requirements of content publishers.

The rapid expansion of AI has been significantly driven by the ingestion of content without compensation. In response, many of the aforementioned publishers have initiated lawsuits and/or negotiated content licensing deals to protect their interests.
